Come as You Are: Finding Your Tribe

Come as You Are: Finding Your Tribe

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend…

Take your time, hurry up
Choice is yours, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend
As an old memoria…

As a trend, as a friend
As an old memoria

Nirvana, Come as You Are, 1991, Geffen Records

Hello world.  You know my professional persona but do you know the true me?  Do you know what makes me tick or the happy spaces in the recesses of my mind and soul?  Let me introduce you to my better half, my authentic self.
---
Shakespeare, Chaucer, Shelley.  These were the authors of my younger, professional self.
Corgan, Cobain, Staley, Hetfield, Holland.  These were the poets of my authentic young self.
Today, that grunge, metal and punk-fueled fire still burns, and I’m still drawn to the poetic musings of the masters of their craft: the raw, passion-fueled vulnerabilities that speak to millions, whether written, spoken or screamed.
---
So I’m nearly 100 words in and you’re probably thinking, that’s cool, but what does this have to do with insurance?   Why should I care about your musical tastes?

The answer is, you don’t have to.  That’s not the point.  These words aren’t meant to get you into the next mosh pit, although you’re gladly invited.

I’m revealing my authentic self to you.

I’m inviting you to find your own tribe, where you belong, where you feel safe, engaged, loved, safe, happy, safe.
---
“Be your authentic self.”  These words echo through CPCU Society conversations regularly and have been championed by peers and friends who have found their voice ahead of me.  At In2Leadership and previously at In2Risk, I expanded my tribe.  It started as a band of one, doubled over the last few years and doubled again at In2Leadership.

At In2Leadership, I also observed a particular instance that struck a chord with me.  I could tell this peer, let’s call him or her Alex, did not have a tribe.  We sat in a seminar, listening, learning and observing.  Alex was engaged and interacting with the group and the professor.  However, based on Alex’s line of questions, I could tell Alex did not have a tribe.  Alex did not feel safe.

So this message is more for Alex than it is for me.  Be your authentic self.  Find your tribe.

It may take time, it may not come easy, but rest-assured, your tribe is out there.  Keep looking.

When I started attending local Chapter meetings, I had no tribe.  I knew 1, maybe 2 people in each meeting.  I didn’t engage, I didn’t interact.  I listened, I learned, and then I went home.

Then I raised my hand to get involved.  I got involved with Chapter leadership, then at the national level.  I found more like-minded insurance nerds.  I then found my tribe and expanded that tribe.  Now, when I attend events I can stimulate both sides of my brain along with my heart and soul.  I come home fueled up to be my best self, by being my authentic self.
Go find your tribe!

And now, a word from our sponsors, or as a friend would say, our future Overlords:

The Power of Authenticity
Being genuine and unapologetically yourself is a valuable trait that can set you apart from the competition. Clients and colleagues appreciate honesty and transparency, and these qualities can foster strong, lasting relationships. By embracing your true self, you can build trust and credibility, which are essential in the insurance business.

Identifying Your Niche
Finding your niche in the insurance industry requires introspection and a deep understanding of your strengths, passions, and values. However, it's not just about identifying a specific market segment; it's also about finding friends and peers who share similar interests and values. These connections can provide another level of contextual relationships that enhance your working relationships. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can lead to a supportive network that encourages growth and collaboration.

Building Expertise
Once you've identified your niche and found your community, it's crucial to build and continuously expand your expertise. Stay updated with industry trends, regulations, and best practices. Attend seminars, workshops, and conferences to network with other professionals and gain insights. The more knowledgeable you are, the more confident you'll feel in your niche, and the more value you'll provide to your clients.

Marketing Your Authentic Self
Marketing yourself authentically is key to attracting clients who resonate with your values and approach. Share your story, experiences, and insights through blogs, social media, and professional networks. Highlight your unique strengths and the reasons why you chose your niche. Authentic marketing not only showcases your expertise but also connects you with clients who appreciate your genuine approach.

Building Relationships
In the insurance industry, relationships are everything. Being true to yourself can lead to meaningful connections. Cultivate relationships with clients, colleagues, and mentors by being approachable, empathetic, and reliable. Listen to their needs, offer personalized solutions, and demonstrate your commitment to their success. Strong relationships can lead to referrals, repeat business, and a solid reputation in your niche.

Adapting to Change
The insurance industry is constantly evolving, and adaptability is crucial for long-term success. Embrace change with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Stay informed about new technologies, emerging risks, and shifting market dynamics. By remaining flexible and proactive, you can navigate challenges and seize opportunities that align with your niche.

Conclusion
Embracing authenticity is a cornerstone of success in the insurance industry. By being true to yourself, identifying your niche, building expertise, marketing authentically, and fostering strong relationships, you can carve out a meaningful and impactful space in the industry. Remember, the journey to finding your niche is a continuous process of growth and self-discovery. So, come as you are, and let your authenticity shine in the world of insurance.
