Who would have thought that I’d be in the insurance industry? No one! Even I, myself, hadn’t thought about it before. When I was a kid, I wasn’t even aware that there was such a career called an “insurance agent”, more specifically a “Medicare Supplement agent”.
Before I became a Medicare Supplement agent, I worked in a whole lot of different fields. I was a nursing assistant, an online researcher, and a virtual assistant. I had never thought of venturing into the insurance field, not until my dad became a Medicare beneficiary. When that time came, I had to assist him with all the Medicare information that he needed to understand before he enrolled himself. One of those days, I went with him to a Medicare seminar, held in the library near us – that’s when a sudden realization hit me.
I realized how many seniors are enrolling in Medicare every year, and how their population can turn into opportunities! Every year, their population is growing and it is also never-ending – we will all grow up and when we do, we will need some form of health coverage and, in this case, it is through Medicare. That thought struck me so hard it got stuck!
The Potential Clients
One of the reasons why I chose to shift my career to the Medigap insurance industry is the opportunity that we have with the elderly population.
The numbers are explosive! There are approximately 10,000 people in the US who turn 65 and become Medicare eligible every day! And that number will continue to grow for the next coming years and even up to the next generations.
With that staggering number, I saw the big opportunity of being a Medigap agent. Since there is no shortage of potential clients, the industry will need a lot of agents to handle each wave of enrollees. If you look deeper into it, the earning potential in this industry will be non-stop and unlimited! Keeping a strong relationship with the consumers after the first sale is an important part of this career to keep the flow of opportunity going.
What is Medigap Insurance? Why This type of Medicare Option?
Medigap Insurance, also known as Medicare supplement plans, is an additional health insurance that is sold by private insurance companies to pay for the healthcare expenses not covered by the original Medicare. It can pay all or part of your out-of-pocket healthcare costs including deductibles, copayments, and even healthcare when you travel outside the US.
I worked as a nursing assistant for geriatric patients for almost three years. With that experience on hand, I knew that I would be a good witness of how much hospital bills and other medical expenses one will possibly face as they age. And I believe that Medigap is a way that would help eliminate the staggering out-of-pocket costs of our Medicare beneficiaries.
My Driving Force
When I helped my dad throughout the process of signing up for his Medicare, I also realized that there is a growing need to educate and engage these consumers effectively. Providing assistance to our seniors so that they can navigate the health insurance decision-making process in an effective way, is what drives me to pursue my journey in the Medicare insurance industry. The satisfying feeling of knowing that you have helped someone lighten the burden of what healthcare expenses may bring is priceless. The growing number of potential clients is also a big plus.
In the end
Medicare isn’t a one-step process kind of coverage. In reality, it is a new and confusing world for our seniors. With a lot of choices offered on the table, our value as their agent is to help them find which among the pool of options is best for them.
